“ Smokey Chooks is a top-tier charcoal chicken joint — no frills, no fluff, just seriously good food. It’s a classic get in, get out kind of place, and they do it right. When I visited, they were busy prepping a heap of catering orders, so there was a limit on chicken per customer and a bit of a wait — but fair enough, I came just as they opened. The charcoal chicken itself was the highlight — super juicy, moist, and flavourful, with barely any dry spots. The marinade was just right — bold enough to stand out without overpowering the natural flavour of the meat. The chips were absolutely elite — some of the best I’ve had. Not sure what the seasoning is (tasted like a punchy chicken salt blend), but it was spot on. Also tried the dim sims, which were surprisingly fresh and way better than what you’d get at your typical hot food bar. The potato scallop/potato bake was also a standout — fresh, not overly sauced, and had a great neutral base that balanced the meal. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ”

“ I went here mostly out of curiosity because I’ve heard a lot of people say this was the best charcoal chicken in Melbourne. I have to say they are right, even on par with Clem’s in Sydney. Chips were perfectly cooked and fresh and just the perfect amount of salt. The chicken was frankly amazing, I got a half and could have eaten a whole one it was just that good. The only criticism I could possibly make is it would be nice if there were more salad/veggie sides on offer. They did have roast veggies (which I plan to try next time) but a potato salad or peas would go down a treat. The owners were incredibly nice and the place is clean as a whistle (rare for a truly top tier chicken shop). So yeah, 5 stars. Definitely will be going again. ”

“ Was in the area and saw the high ratings, didn’t disappoint. Got the Lemon Herb Burger and Greek Salad, both were amazing and great value for money. Greek Salad has generous amounts of Feta and Olive Oil. Bossman gave us complimentary chips because apparently we were waiting for ages for our food (we weren’t) and genuinely some of the best charcoal chicken chips ya’ll ever eat. If I didnt live on the other side of Melbourne I’d come here every week. Please try this joint its amazing and staff are so nice and welcoming. ”

I don’t know how they make the chicken so tasty and the seasoning on the crispy golden chips is the best. The service is fantastic and they’re extremely well priced! Highly recommend!! “ Last week, a tantalizing smoky aroma lured me across the street to Smokey Chooks, and what an incredible find it was! I’d seen rave reviews online, but I was skeptical whether they truly captured the essence of this place. Well, I’m here to tell you, they absolutely do! The chicken here is nothing short of delectable. It’s crispy on the outside, perfectly seasoned, and so juicy on the inside that it just melts in your mouth. There’s no exaggeration in saying this is a must-try. I was so impressed that I even hopped on a tram from downtown just to satisfy my craving for their chicken. Although they opened at 5 PM, I made sure to get there by 5:11 because I couldn’t bear the thought of missing out on this culinary delight. Smokey Chooks, you’ve got yourself a fan for life! ”

“ Believe the hype, the chicken here is exceptional. I came here on on a Friday night around 5:30pm and ordered a whole chicken with large chips. The boss was very generous with the chips that it was falling out of the paper bag and into the plastic bag. Excellent problem to have. The whole chicken is cut into 8 pieces for your convenience. Excellent seasoning of rosemary, chicken salt and olive oil. But not so oily that the plastic bag and your hands will be overwhelmed. ”
